The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious national-level examination primarily designed to test the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering, technology, architecture, and postgraduate level subjects in science, commerce, and arts. GATE examination is being conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. The organizing institute rotates among these institutions each year.
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates currently studying in the 3rd year or higher of any undergraduate degree program are eligible to apply. Candidates who have already completed any government-approved degree program in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Science / Commerce / Arts are also eligible for the exam.
Age Limit: There is no age limit to appear for the GATE examination.
Exam Pattern: The exam will be conducted in an Online Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. It will have a total duration of 3 hours (180 minutes) and will carry a maximum of 100 marks. This exam has two sections, General Aptitude (GA) and the Candidate's selected subject section. The general aptitude section carries 15 marks, 5 questions of 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks, comprising a total of 5 marks. This section tests verbal ability and numerical ability. While the second candidate's Selected Subject section carries 85 marks. Covers the syllabus of the chosen GATE paper.
Types of Questions: The question paper has three types of questions:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ): Carry 1 or 2 marks each. Have four options, with only one correct choice. Negative marking applies (1/3 mark deducted for a wrong 1-mark MCQ, and 2/3 mark deducted for a wrong 2-mark MCQ).
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): Carry 1 or 2 marks each. Have four options, but one or more options can be correct. There is no negative marking for MSQs, but partial credit is also not awarded (candidate must select all correct options and no incorrect options).
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT): Carry 1 or 2 marks each. Require candidates to enter a numerical answer using the virtual keyboard. There is no negative marking for NAT questions.
